31 julio The Right ToolOKAY! I know you use a whip and a chair to tame a lion. You put a rat in a maze and train it with cheese hidden somewhere within. You train a puppy with praise and rewards.
Closing it behind him doesn't help, he wonders what your problem is. Reminding doesn't do it, you're a nag. The door just gets left open, might as well be living in a barn or chicken house. Ah yes, August is yet to come, so is the highest electric bill of the year. Maybe that will make an impact. Bought Wit? Better Than Told . .As a kid growing up, I heard this phrase often. I had no idea what it meant. I only know that it was used whenever someone did something they had been warned against doing. I can still hear it to this day, "bought wit is better than told." Deep inside my frugality there was an innocent ignorance though. Little did I know that "cheap" was not the best criteria for judging if you had a good bargain. So, time after time when that "cheap" package of toilet tissue or that store brand of dish washing liquid ran out before I could get it home and put away, I still did not "get-it". Even when 4 cups of detergent didn't make suds in the washer, I couldn't go down without a fight. I switched to another "cheap" brand. Same thing. No suds. Had to use about a half a box to wash a load of clothes. It took a while, along with quite a bit of visual research - in other words, watching how other people's things did or didn't last. The real kicker was a bit of sarcastic humorous teasing from my brother. He laughed, talked, and joked for days about my "cheaply" pitiful paper towels, said they fall apart so badly I might as well take some dollar bills out of my wallet and throw them in the trash. After all this, something began to sink in - "this bargain hunting and frugal couponing is NOT working." Not being stupid, I gradually began buying quality name brands. It hurt my pride as much as it hurt my wallet to buy the three dollar and something (almost four dollars) 4-roll pack of toilet tissue so I said nothing - not to anyone. I noticed the difference immediately but, still said nothing. Instead of the usual three to four days that the cheap brand lasted, the name brand was still around three weeks to a month later. WOW, big difference - and savings ( didn't have to keep going back every few days to buy more cheap stuff. Same thing happened with the dish washing liquid. I drug myself kicking and screaming into the store to pay a dollar and something for dish liquid as compared to my usual sixty-nine cents. But, wonder of wonders, the name brand lasted a good two to three weeks. Cheap stuff? Only lasted foud days. And, so it went, on and on (right caroldee?) each time I bought quality over cheapness, quality won out. There's "my bought wit" - I paid the price and learned my lesson - the hard way. So, it is true, "Bought wit is Better Than Told". 30 julio The Ensemble Theatre - Houston, Texas
The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and enlighten, entertain and enrich a diverse community. Thirty-one years later, the theatre has evolved from a touring company operating from the trunk of Mr. Hawkins’ car to being one of Houston’s finest historical cultural institutions. The Ensemble is one of the only professional theatres in the region dedicated to the production of works portraying the African American experience, the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest, and holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s largest African American theatres owning and operating its facility and producing in-house.
Read more . . . Typing Spanish Letters on English Language KeyboardsJordyn just shared some interesting information with me and, I want to pass it along. I don't type Spanish letters often, but this will come in handy when I need to type the names of two people I know with accents in their names. Use the NUMERIC keypad. The numbers on top of the keyboard will not work. Example: alt + 0233 = é Try it! I like it. 29 julio Hi Friends, Happy Tuesday! Before I start on my rounds, just the biggest hi and how are you to all of you. I noticed yesterday that when I sign-out of live spaces, it doesn't always sign me out. No matter how many times I click it, I remain signed-in. Maybe this happens to others also.
This post is just an observation for anyone who might not have noticed this, or it could be something with my settings.
I'm checking those now. Website UpdatedRather than the restful lazy Sunday I had planned, I spent the better
part of the afternoon and early evening updating my website. I hadn't
touched it since I finished it in . . . what? . . .April? May? I realized a month or so ago that it was just sitting there, stagnant - not very? (ummm?) finished. So, today I jumped in, head first, and started updating. I started with my newsletter sign up process. That went well, had to call my computer son after I did it to make sure what I did was okay. "Yes", he said. Then he did some tweaking on his end and "bwaa-laa", the newsletter sign up process is done. The only thing missing now is getting people to sign up for it. Hint, hint, hint. Blatant huh? Visit my site Dell Girl Publishing and leave me a comment or two about it. I would love to hear from you - only have one requirement . . .Don't be mean. After that I made some other corrections and changes. Ironically, each change lead to another and on and on. Finally had to make myself quit, like now - I have to stop for the night. I'll see you in the morning. 26 julio Happy Weekend From Blank Brain"The mind is a terrible thing to waste." Or, is it? "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." You can see where I'm going with this. I spent the better part of this afternoon, waiting for the a/c repairman to finish. He did. Thankfully, he was able to get the air going again without the usual problems, can't find a part, place closed, etc. While I waited for him I ran a few things around in my head as to what I would blog about today. My first thought was to wish everybody a happy weekend on their sites. Then I thought about posting a giant greeting to all on my site. Umm... too impersonal? And so it goes, according to caroldee, on and on. I'll do this. No. I'll do that or I can do it this way. Here it comes, befuddlement. Twisting and turning the already overextended "pea-brain" beyond its limits. Blank blank blank. Nothing comes to mind. Everything comes to mind. Too much too little too fuzzy too . . . Oh! Dang girl, stop your blithering. Ahemmm! Okay. Hello friends. I hope everyone is well. Hope you have a lovely and restful weekend. I'll see you all again on Monday. By then, I shall have shaken myself out sufficiently, slapped some cologne behind my ears, and whipped myself back into some semblance of a rational functioning human being. See you all Monday - bright and early - around noon or so. 24 julio Dolly Wreaks HavocHey! It's me again! Yes, Dolly granted us some much needed rain. It continues in spells, not too much at any one time. That's all good.
On the other hand, Dolly's side-effects are distracting me from enjoying the nice wet water from the skies. What side-effects, you ask? Glad you asked. Yesterday I told you about the creepy critter trying to get inside out of the rain. Well, it took some doing on my part but, I got over it. Or, or so I thought until I walk in the den where I do all my blog-bonding to find another visitor from the wild.
There he is in all his glory, sitting right smack dab in the middle of the den looking toward the television as if he wants me to turn it on for him. No! I didn't freak this time. I saw him first, that makes a difference. It's the surprises that discombobulate me. I did quickly grab the hedge clippers (again) and aim for his head. He must have radar because he dashes away behind the curtain by the television.
Oh well, it's just a lizzard. How did he get in? I know I took great pains to seal around the bottom of the front door with 2 inch wide masking tape before going to bed last night. Maybe he slipped in when Jordyn left early this morning.
I'll just have to be extra careful and watch out now that I know he is in the house. Uh-oh! There he is, leisurely crawling up the side of the . . . WHAM. I slap him down with my terrycloth slipper. Then I grab the hammer I'd gotten out after he got away the first time. BAM! Whack! Pound! "Die, die, die, you sneaky little varmit. You should have stayed outside."
Okay. I'm not getting myself all worked up like yesterday. This is well thought out, BAM, I hit him another whack - for good measure. Now he lays (lies) (don't have time for that now) broken in a million tiny pieces.
As soon as the weather breaks (and I can get some good male type help) that flower bed in front of the porch has got to go! 23 julio Rain TodayWednesday, July 23, 2008I hadn't quite decided what to write about today. I kept going over a couple of things that made a nest up in my head as I stumbled from one menial task after another. I blundered very un-lady-like through them, grunting aloud to myself about the unfairness of household chores, until I had them in a managable pile.

"Go lay down." Or, is it, "Go lie down?"
Later when you're explaining to your friend what happened, do you report:
Refresh yourself. Take the Quiz. Lie vs Lay 21 julio Sites Closed for Maintenance18 julio Updated Website - Added Photo GallerySpent the afternoon updating my website. I haven't done a thing to it since I finished it in April, so it has been sitting idle looking sad and forelorn. Maybe I should say forgotten. Each time I opened it to make sure all links still worked and worked properly I thought, "I need to do something about this site."
I needed to get the blogs functioning correctly and that took quite a while. Mainly because I probably went a little too far with the blogging. Maybe I should have made one nice functional blog about my book. I could have used that to toss in a tidbit of other stuff now and then.
The mini-update is done, a photo gallery to soothe the savage beast when things get stressful.
Hope you'll visit and enjoy DellGirl's Photo Gallery. And, The Winner Is . . .Friday July 18, 2008 - 2:10 p.m. - You design the contest. I have thought and pondered until I'm frazzled. I asked and you answered, "Do You Like Contests?" I got your answers. They were all good answers to the question. It helped to understand how and why you would or would not enter a contest. Still, I'm looking for a way to get more comments and readers to my spaces and blogs. I also want to give away a book! Who - will win the prize? How would you choose a winner? What would someone have to do to win? What - is the prize? A copy of my book, At The Starting Gate. Where - will this happen? The contest/give-away must be designed around making comments on my blogs, either here on my Spaces Blog and/or my Starting Gate Blog or both. Got any ideas? When - will the winner get the prize? How long should it run, a week, a month, what? Why - I want to get more people to comment on my blogs. And, I want to give away a copy of my book. Okay, there it is. Now, I can stop trying to figure it out alone. Can you help me? 16 julio Jordyn in Ashes To AfricaUpdate: Jordyn latest stage play at
Houston's Ensemble Theatre
April 26 - May 25, 2008
Ashes To Africa
by
Mark Clayton Southers
Directed by
Eileen J. Morris
Ashes To Africa connects a family in one of the toughest times, the death of a loved one. It is during this time that secrets are exposed, that feelings are made known and families recall and bask in their memories. Understanding the wishes of a loved one when they are not there to help connect the dots can become a mystery. Each person can shed light to help unravel the puzzle. Ashes addresses the issues relevant to a loving family, sibling rivalry, a woman experiencing menopause and a diminished sexual desire, the daily routine of living, a teen agers's need to find his/her place, and cousins competing, all while dealing with their loss. - Notes From the Director, Eileen J. Morris
Jordyn plays Marta Henderson, a granddaughter. The play is set in winter - February 1988, over a two week period in the Henderson's house in Baltimore, Maryland. CONTESTSDo you like contests? What is your favorite kind of contest? What makes you enter? What are your favorite prize give-aways in contests? Would you refer others to a blog or site to win a prize in a contest? I did not sleep late, didn't dawdle my time away. But, I can't see one single solitary thing I accomplished today in the "being productive" department. Oh well, as the young folks say, "Whatever".
Tutoring student was a no-show. Supposed to come tomorrow. Ok. I didn't check back with the city about the high water bill, didn't feel like being jerked around any further. I'll write slash call or something tomorrow, maybe.
Oh! I did generate? make? create? a Bill of Sale form "the Mister" needed. Took all of about 30 or 40 minutes to create and fill out the form, save it, email it to myself (to check for accuracy) and to him at his shop. Didn't work. Whatever program that was, it couldn't be opened. I then re-typed the form in Microsoft Word and emailed it as an attachment to him and myself - again. This did work.
Called him at the shop to tell him it was ready. His reply? "Just fax it to # 000-XXX-5550" because you know I can't get into my email." Huh? Did I hear right? Yea. I did. I fax the thing to him at the # he gave me, said a silent "hooray".
Now I can go visit my cyber friends. That'll take the edge off nasty tasting things like water bills and such. UUgggggghh! 6 Foreign Expressions You Should KnowWhether you like it or not, foreign expressions represent an integral part of the English language (and of many other languages, too).
