On The Road To The Starting Gate: To Mama Leona's We Go

One bright summer day we leave our tiny three room house in the Saw Mill Quarters walking the short distance from our backyard up the narrow dirt road toward the school. We round the slight curve past the church. Stop. Look both ways then, carefully cross the paved highway.

Happy for the play break, we hop skip and jump our way down the hill past Mr. Sam Gilmore’s big white house with the hurricane fence. Before long we reach the top of the hill singing and skipping past Mr. Hank & Mrs. Hannah Davis’ little green house. Or was it blue? Green, blue it doesn’t matter, we are glad as can be on our way to Mama Leona’s.

With tons of energy left to burn we pass the yellow and white "section-houses" where families that work for the railroad live. I wonder why they are called "section-houses". Is it because there are only three or four of them and they are located along a section of the railroad tracks for their employees to live in? Ummm...

We run lickety-split across the railroad-tracks and don’t stop until we reach the bottom of the steep little hill that runs along side the track, all the way across the huge open field toward Miss Lorene’s.

We’re now in Palmetto– Palmetto Quarters.

A short distance down the path Grandpa & Grandma Bluitt sit on the porch, rocking rhythmically in squeaky rocking chairs. Mr. Earl sits perched on the edge of the porch digging in the dirt with a stick. We are not really related to Grandpa and Grandma, that’s just what everybody calls them.

“Good evening, Grandpa,” we call out in unison. Grandpa nods with a grunt swaying steadily back and forth.

“Good evening, Grandma,” we shout. Grandma speaks back, interrupting her rocking long enough to spit a mouthful of snuff over the end of the porch.

A mere hop, skip and jump away, close enough to throw a rock, lives Mr. Henry (Grandpa and Grandma’s son) and his wife, Mrs. Bertha. No sign of them today, so we don’t have to dilly-dally around speaking politely and making nice. There’s one last hill to climb to Mama Leona’s.

We scurry quickly up the final winding hill, through the tree-lined rut-filled trail to Aunt Mary Jane & Mr. Clyde Addison’s. With Aunt Mary Jane being a whopper of a mouthful to say, we chop it down to a manageable bite-sized “Ant-Mae-Jane.”

Around the bend and finally, we arrive at Mama Leona’s.

“Hey, Mama Leona, we’re here,” we shout, loud enough for her to hear from her seat in the living room. Before we reach the first step, she’s out the door, standing on the porch with her hands planted firmly on her hips.

“You mean y’all passed by Grandpa and Grandma’s and didn’t speak to Mr. Earl? Just get your little behinds right on back down that hill and speak to Mr. Earl like you’re supposed to. And, don’t ever do that again or you’re all going to get it! Now go!” She demanded in her no-non-sense, not-to-be-questioned voice.

Playing Hookie

Okay, I spent a few minutes trying to think of something important to blog about, couldn't come up with a single thing. Next, I thought about fabricating this elaborate list of what I have been doing the past several days, and that made me tired just thinking about it. I searched my files for writing tips, grammar rules and usage and so on. Uggghh!! Don't feel like doing that.

This is all very boring. So, I'm just going to lay it all out - I am not doiing a thing today. I'm being lazy. L-A-Z-Y; lazy. On top of that, I'm curled up on the chaise lounge with my laptop, food and water, remote control and fans blowing in my direction from two sides of the room. I'm playing hookie from chores.

I'm getting comfy to watch CSI, one of my favorites. I've already seen every episode, more than a couple of times, but I LOVE it! This is the one where a much hated amateur hockey player dies after a fight breaks out on the ice and he is found (dead) with a deep, bloody gash across his neck.

I could probably recite the script word-for-word along with the characters, but I won't. I'll watch with the same intensity as I did the very first time I saw it.Today must be CSI marathon day, I see they are on back-to-back until 8 pm. I won't see them all, I'll change channels if Law & Order has something good coming on.

There is my confession. I'm guilty as charged, I'm a die-hard CSI fan.

Assassin

The FBI had an opening for an assassin. After all the background checks, interviews and testing were done, there were 3 finalists; two men and a woman.

For the final test, the FBI agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. 'We must know that you will follow your instructions no matter what the circumstances.'

Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in a chair . . . Kill her!!'
The man said, 'You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife.'

The agent said, 'Then you're not the right man for this job. Take your wife and go home.'

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room.

All was quiet for about 5 minutes. The man came out with tears in his eyes, 'I tried, but I can't kill my wife.'

The agent said, 'You don't have what it takes. Take your wife home.'

Finally, it was the woman's turn.. She was given the same instructions, to kill her husband.

She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one after another. They heard screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping the sweat from her brow.

'This gun is loaded with blanks' she said. 'I had to beat him to death with the chair.'

MORAL:
Women are crazy.
Don't mess with them.

Is That Brown Snow?

For weeks now the front yard and especially the driveway has been a solid mess. Pinecone pieces cover almost every inch of space, like brown snow. In a way, it doesn't make sense to clean it up because it will be right back within a matter of hours. But then, can't just leave it. It looks awful and it gets tracked into the house, which is another mess altogether.

"How 'bout That"

     How 'Bout That!      Jordyn

It's been busy around here, so busy I lost track of time. Everything was fine until yesterday. About 1 pm yesterday, after quite a lot of much needed rain, it started to "feel" like Saturday. Really feel like Saturday. Once that got a grip on me I was hooked, jaunted merrily along like it was Saturday. Didn't realize it was Friday instead of Saturday until bedtime. Oh well, so much for thinking it was the wrong day. It happens.

Jordyn was (is) in another stage play, "How "bout That" Friday and Saturday night. It is a stage play written and produced by up and coming new writer/producer, Donnetta Amos. "How "bout That" is a comedy about the Baldwin family whose rich, snobby children plan a birthday party for their impossible to please, tyrant mother, Johnnie Mae.

Jordyn plays the snotty rich daughter to Johnnie Mae. She plays the part so well, if I didn't personally know better, I would think she was that way for real. She had all the right moves for the part, all the way down to the hair-slinging-nose-in-the-air thing.

Jordyn was spectacular as usual on stage, according to the extremely biased mother-writer-blogger-person writing this. One minute she had the audience laughing hysterically and the next there wasn't a dry eye in the house, people everywhere - sobbing and crying. How would I know? I couldn't see for wiping my eyes, laughing and crying. How? I heard them ... either laughing loudly and deeply or sniffling and sobbing sadly as they (we) struggled through Jordyn's on-stage pain. The play was as promised - a wonderful comedy.

There, that's my first review. Too bad they're not paying me to say this. Don't some people get paid for reviewing "things"? Haha heehee, I couldn't resist that.

I'll visit all of you later. Take care.

I Called Your Name

There's a personal "Hello" waiting for you: At The Starting Gate

Food For Thought

Beaula is a kind friendly lady with a positive attitude about life. Although she doesn’t have hundreds of friends, she is loyal and committed to the few she friends she does have.

Often times Beaula finds herself the recipient of those dreaded “pass-this-along-or-you-will-get-toenail-fungus” type emails from her friends. Some of the annoying emails promise wealth untold if this is passed on to fifty-five people in the next ten minutes. They give examples of others who have fallen on ill luck because they did not do as instructed or of those who got sinfully rich as a result of carrying out the instructions exactly as outlined in said emails.

All emails from these friends are forwards from ump-teen hundred previous people with no personal greeting or even a “hey fool, how you doing” attached.  For a while Beaula reluctantly passed the emails along, although she did not personally believe in the dreadful warnings of coming doom or the unforeseen “out-of-the-blue” riches because of sending along a simple email.

One day Beaula sent out an email to all who had previously dared to send her stuff. Hers was a simple request, no passing anything along, just “check this out and respond to me”, I’m selling buckets of dirt from my back yard for five cents a bucket, which will really help me pay my light bill.” Of her twenty-five “so-called” friends, two responded. One said, “I got your note.” The other said, “What a clever gal you are!”

Bewildered, Beaula chalked it up to people being busy and got on with her life. Some time later she receives an email from one of the friends detailing a project she’s putting together which includes an invitation to a “fund-raising event” to fund the project. It also contained a “donate now” option in the email.

Ah-haaa! I wonder if that person remembered Beaula’s request, if she considered carefully the thoughts of the person or people receiving the email. I think not.

Technology is merely a convenient and impersonal tool for some to reach many people at one time. Not everybody gives much thought to maintaining a personal relationship with people on the receiving end of their “stuff”.

What will Beaula do? We’ll have to wait and see.

As for me, technical and impersonal doesn’t cut it; I still like the human factor.

Peole Who Rain On Your Parade

Long before I wrote and published my book, At the Starting Gate, I was an active-card-carrying-dues-paying-member in the game of “life”. As a young wife and mother I embraced my role enthusiastically with the goal of becoming the African American June Cleaver of my generation. Life kept happening, I kept pushing forward. There was no time or inclination to reflect on whether anything could or should be changed or different.

Without giving it a moment's thought, I quietly tucked my June Cleaver fantasy snugly amongst the realities of everyday life in 1970's Black America.

Later, with all three kids practically grown and able to make their own way in the world, I began to focus in another direction. I set out to finally release my inner creativity. . . Continue

English Is A Crazy Language

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

PS - Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"?

Got a minute? There's more...

Education Today

Today's post is not my usual everyday type of post but it is about a topic that is dear to my heart - education. I started reading a very interesting article in Newsweek about school size and some ramifications of such. As a graduate of an extremely small high school and a parent of children who attended high schools with senior classes almost larger than my entire high school, I dove into the article with great anticipation.

I firmly believe that all children should have the best education possible. That means teaching the basics - from the beginning. In my opinion, the most disturbing and destructive problem facing today's children is this new fangled idea of "teaching-to-state-mandated-tests". It has been from its inception and will continue to be detrimental to children's academic success. Call me crazy if you want, but I know that if children are taught the basics early and correctly they will be able to pass any test thrown at them.

Before I get too far off on a tangent, let me jump down from my self-righteous "high-horse" and get to the point. This Newsweek article lists our nation's top schools and provides supporting evidence of their status as quality schools.

The Article lists this year's top 100 high schools today, it shows that those with fewer students are flourishing. It also states that fifty years ago, they were the latest thing in educational reform: big, modern, suburban high schools with students counted in the thousands. As baby boomers came of high-school age, big schools promised economic efficiency, a greater choice of courses, and, of course, better football teams. Only years later did we understand the trade-offs this involved: the creation of lumbering bureaucracies, the difficulty of forging personal connections between teachers and students. SAT scores began dropping in 1963; today, on average, 30 percent of students do not complete high school in four years, a figure that rises to 50 percent in poor urban neighborhoods. While the emphasis on teaching to higher, test-driven standards embodied . . . Read more

According to the article, Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2007 divided by the number of graduating seniors. Read more

To Blog Or Not To Blog

Everywhere you look people are blogging. They are blogging about blogging. A lot of what you read, talks about blogging, about what it is, about what it is not. People are blogging about talking about blogging. Talking about what makes a good blog, what makes a poor blog. The big question seems to be, To blog or not to blog?

A big question for who? Somebody out there somewhere is wondering - pondering the question, "should I blog or should I not?" If you're pondering the question, go blog. If you're wondering if you should blog or not, by all means, BLOG. If you think it, Blog It. Only you can be the judge as to whether you should or should not blog.

There are blogs out there by people on either end of the spectrum, from the experts to everyday people. So if you have something you would like to blog about -- Do It! There are so-called expert blogs riddled with typos, mispellings, misleading personal opinions and the like. Then, there are amateur blogs filled with quality information that is well-formatted and beautifully written.

Q:Is there any benefit to blogging?
A: Yes. But, don't let that be your motivating force. Blog because you want to not because somebody said you would gain from it. On the other hand, don't hesitate to blog because another somebody pointed out a down-side to blogging. Blog for the sake of blogging, for the fun of it, be persistent, stay current and focused, and be committed to what you are blogging about.

To Blog or Not To Blog?

YES! Blog, blog, blog, you will love it.
